For something incredibly soft and luxurious to wear, look no further than some of our organic cotton products. With an ever-growing eco-friendly range, it’s important to understand the benefits of choosing some of the sustainable materials we have available and, how they are made.
Organic Cotton is grown without the aid of any chemicals, which positively impacts the environment in the following ways:
Organic cotton creates healthy soils, which are better at absorbing rainfall. This helps fight against flooding, but also retains moisture better in times of drought.
Many fertilisers are fossil fuel based, which are key contributors to climate change.
Less energy is used overall in the production due to not using mass produced chemicals, therefore the carbon footprint of growing the crop is much lower than standard cotton.
By not using fertilisers and pesticides so water run off into the water system is cleaner and healthier for the environment and for drinking.
It encourages a more balanced eco-system of healthier soil balance, using animals and insects to manage pests and allows better crop rotation, which keeps soil healthier (as per point 1).
Creating organic cotton crops, enables organic seed to be produced and used for following years, giving a more sustainable long term approach to farming.
It is better for the health of the farmers and cotton workers not working with these chemicals. Sometimes the farmers cannot afford the necessary safety equipment to protect themselves.
As well as huge benefits to the environment, organic cotton is also classed as ‘hypoallergenic’ so has no allergy effect or irritation to the person wearing it too.
